Work on the preservation of the element factory has begun. Sund & Bælt has initiated the environmental impact assessment (EIA), which will form the basis for the political decision to preserve the element factory.
When the production of tunnel elements for the Fehmarn Belt-connection is completed, the plan was to decommission the factory in Rødbyhavn at Lolland. The tunnel element factory alongside the port, access roads, supply chains and office- and administrative buildings, constitute one great production facility in Rødbyhavn.
There are many advantages for society by preserving the tunnel element factory - among others economic, environmental, timewise, and not least the possibility of preserving local jobs.
In addition to providing elements for future public mega-infrastructure projects, the factory can be used for other public (and non-public) mega-projects that require large scale production and shipping facilities. It will, among other things, be an obvious opportunity to produce and ship elements for the large expansion of wind energy, which is necessary to achieve the government's ambition of climate neutrality in 2050.
